With Pantone having announced Emerald to be the colour of the year for 2013, I’m sure you would have seen plenty of posts surrounding that topic or rather that colour. And yes, I’m about to do the same. Not because it IS the colour of the year but more because of my slowly growing love for colours in general. It all started last year when I started to include more vibrant shades into my wardrobe – fuchsia, royal blue, yellow, and even floral prints (ok so it’s not a plain colour but it’s a collection of colours!) were amongst the items I’ve since included and actually worn out. During my trip to Singapore late last year, included in my shopping spree were also some clothing items that featured the colour green, a colour I usually avoid. Teal, emerald and even mint were the hot favourites and yes, it even surprised me that I picked them. That was BEFORE Pantone announced this year’s colour of the year. But, I often get confused between teal and emerald because they can be so close yet still not so much the same. So to clarify the difference I turned to my very trusty “resource”…Twitter – what else!
Here’s the low down, teal leans towards a more bluish tinge while emerald has a bit more yellow it in and is a bit more richer and vibrant than teal.

Like most colours in the spectrum, not everyone can wear every colour and emerald can be a difficult colour to pull off if you’re not the “right” skin tone. But, like what I’ve previously suggested with other trends, if you can’t wear it on your body, then include it in small doses – via a scarf, jewellery, shoes, or even make-up.

Jumping on the “emerald” bandwagon (or maybe they’re not but hey, who knows right?) is the up and coming film Oz The Great and Powerful. You must be wondering what this has got to do with the colour emerald right? Well, unlike the classic Wizard of Oz version, this is the story about THE wizard himself…ok, more a magician, Oscar Diggs (played by James Franco) getting blown away into the land of Oz! The gist of the story is how Oscar has to convince the three witches that he IS the wizard of Oz as stated in the prophecy. This is where he also has to choose between being a good man or a great one. What does that mean? I have no idea. And the main attraction? Besides the 3 witches of course, is Emerald City where the witch Evanora (played by Rachel Weisz) lives and rules. Everything in Emerald City is of course…emerald, including Evanora’s extravagantly designed costume. Designed with the character’s personality in mind, not only does the costume focus on the majestic colour of emerald but also the shape and architecture of Emerald City giving it that powerful and distinctive design.

Oz the Great and Powerful is due to be released on the 7th of March, and by the looks of the trailer, the film reminds me a little bit of Alice in Wonderland (the one with Johnny Depp) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnussus. It’s just the mixture of colours, surreal quality of the images that evoke an amazing fantasy world beyond planet earth. Besides James Franco and Rachel Weisz, the other stars in this film include Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams. I can’t tell you much more about the film because I haven’t seen it myself but, thanks to Disney, I’ve got 5 passes to give away to ONE lucky winner!
